Rescue workers

Rescue workers are getting support for their mental resiliencies

Little accessible information has been written for rescue workers on this subject, although international surveys show that between 10 and 35 percent of them develop work related psychological problems.

There is attention for the impact of major events during the professional training. However, less attention is paid to the impact of the daily routine of exposure to human suffering, danger and violence. Equally scant attention is available for the influence on a personal level in professional and private life.

The practice-oriented book ‘Resilience for rescue workers. For professionals committed to order, health and security’, wants to meet this need.

Summary contents

Rescue workers are, more than other professionals, confronted with dramatic events and human suffering. The aim of this book is to provide guidelines for rescue workers and their leaders to cope with emotionally demanding work. Examples of rescue professionals are doctors, nurses, and first aid workers as well as personnel in the military, the police, fire brigades and ambulance services.

The professional training of these rescue workers usually stresses the medical and technical aspects of the work. The daily exposure to unexpected dramatic situations, danger, violence, disasters and accidents gets less consideration. Moreover, few clues are given to cope with it. Admittedly, attention for the impact of major events has been on the increase, but there is no such attention for the exposure to human suffering, danger and violence as daily routine. There is equally scant attention for the personal functioning of the worker, in private life and professionally.

This book wants to meet this need. Moreover, the author hopes it will give recognition and appreciation to rescue workers in situations they are confronted with professionally, but affect them personally.
