Self guidance
Training: Self guidance
Self guidance according to your personal manual
People take for granted that ‘they function’, in the same way that a vacuum cleaner does what it is supposed to do. Your mind or psyche does what you want it to do in mundane things like committing yourself to something, concentrating on it, shopping, working. But also in greater matters, like playing the role of a partner, father, mother, friend, son, daughter, employee.
When people fail to function in the way they used to, they respond to it as to a malfunctioning vacuum cleaner: they bang on it, shake it, replace the dust bag, hoping that this will make it work again. Or they blame someone else for having used it too heavily. The most effective thing to do is to get the manual and read it, and find a possible cause of the defect.
People tend to deal in a similar way with their personal malfunctioning. The cannot relax or enjoy themselves anymore, or concentrate on their work. A quick solution is sought: kick yourself in the ass, go an evening out, go to bed early, sometimes with a lasting result, but often the effect is short lived.
It may be helpful to read the manual in order to find the cause and a possible solution of the problem. It takes a little more time, but it is a step towards permanent effective functioning.
This book provides directives for “self guidance” in accordance with a personal manual. Manuals are described for different types of people:
- serious thinker
- impulsive activist
- amiable (apparent) strong person
- open and sensitive
This training provides guidelines to learn to know your personality and how to guide it.
Aim of the training
Your personal manual, i.e. the way you have learned to cope with life as it is, is often put to the test by changes in your life. These can be sudden changes, like a new job, moving to another town, loss of a loved one or the birth of a child. Changes can also be gradual, like growing work load, more and more setbacks and worries, disappointments in people.
These changes, for better or worse, always put your personal manual to the test.
When you notice that your personal manual does not apply anymore to the life that you are leading, reviewing this manual may be a good idea. It will give you the needed guidelines to acknowledge your personal traits, and how to handle them. It will enable you to get your life under control again, finding a healthy balance between demands that are imposed on you and your personal capacities. Learn to rely on your own strength and on making your own choices is the central theme.
The result
Your self guidance and self confidence are strengthened and you have sufficient skills to respond adequately to the many demands you face in every day life, at home and on the job. The feeling that you are in control gives you energy and vitality. This is not only a great gain for yourself, but also for your environment.
Day 1 - What is my personal manual?
The focus is on learning to know and use our personal manual. This manual consists of your personal style and basic patterns of thinking, feeling and doing. It is strengthening self knowledge.
The following issues are raised:
· Learning to guide your own thinking, feeling and doing
· Learning to observe your own patterns of behaviour
· Correcting the less effective patterns, based on practical guidelines
· Exploiting your personal strength in thinking, feeling and doing
· What role in private life and in my work situation suits me best?
·
Day 2 - What is my basic attitude to life
The focus is on how you stand in life, in relationship to others. Whereas the first day concentrated on gaining self knowledge, this day is about training effective behaviour towards others.
The guidelines are adapted to your personal pattern of behaviour; a few basic patterns are listed here below.
- serious thinker
- impulsive activist
- amiable (apparent) strong person
- open and sensitive
The following issues are raised:
· Resilience in relationships with others
· Speaking clearly about your own needs and limitations
· Managing energy and commitment
· Personal strength in relationships with others
· Personal plan of action form home and work situations
Follow up – day 3 What choice do I make?
There is opportunity to exchange the results of the exercises and the application of the guidelines and to recapitulate the material of the first two days. Making choices is a main theme. The question is: what can I effectively learn to do better and are there other things that I just have to learn to live with?
The following issues are raised:
· Self acceptance; learn to live within your limitations
· Making choices; what inspires you? What really matters to you in life?
· Handling growing pains (rather the old familiar than the new unknown)
· Explaining your ‘personal manual’ to others
· The personal First Aid kit; the ‘do’s en don’ts’ for a good mental condition
Procedure
